What if a resident of Pantin had more in common with a resident of the Raval district in Spain than with a resident of the 5th arrondissement of Paris? Waël Sghaier, a filmmaker originally from Seine-Saint-Denis, asked himself this question to offer a different perspective on the suburbs.
"Banlie.ue" takes us on a journey through many working-class neighborhoods across Europe, using images and testimonies from residents determined to bring about change. From Bratislava to Brussels, via Stockholm, Waël Sghaier highlights the diverse aspects of these often-neglected areas and explores the existence of a European suburban identity.
Are the problems the same from one European suburb to another? What organizations exist to find solutions?
This documentary gives us another perspective on these working-class neighborhoods and highlights the actions and solutions implemented to address major challenges.
The motivation for this project was to seek examples in Europe to compare, explore and work together on solutions based on positive and collective initiatives to maintain a framework that would allow us all to reflect together.
“Banlie.ue” is also a way to invite residents of our own working-class neighborhoods to exchange ideas on topics that affect all suburbs in Europe.
