As a dancer, Justine Coulmy initially developed a love of movement before turning to filmmaking. Observing bodies, their weight, their flow, and their connections informs her cinematic practice. She has worked as a director and cinematographer on numerous dance-related projects, notably Pas à Pas, her first feature-length documentary, which follows the creation of the ballet Giselle in a suburban conservatory.

After earning a degree in dance, she enrolled at the ENS Louis-Lumière for a three-year program in visual arts. Her final thesis, focusing on emerging technical challenges related to virtual productions in France, led her to explore the interactions between real and virtual sets. Issues of 3D lighting, rendering, and photorealism are now central to her work, whether on green screen shoots or in front of LED walls.

Justine Coulmy currently works as a director of photography between Paris and Montpellier, on fiction, documentary and music video projects.
