In the community gardens of Bakau, The Gambia, women grow more than just crops — they cultivate autonomy.
Serreh, born among these gardens, has spent her entire life working the land. Today, her body bears the marks of decades of manual labor under difficult conditions. Exhausted, she continues to return to the place that shaped her — a garden she calls home.
Together with a close-knit group of women, she faces the daily challenges of climate change, soil degradation due to chemical fertilizers, poor infrastructure, and the absence of proper storage facilities.
Through Serreh’s story, the film explores the invisible threads linking ecology, economic hardship, and women’s empowerment. Despite the toll, Serreh keeps searching for collective solutions, grounded in solidarity and resilience.
Filmed during an artistic residency in Bakau, “Serreh” is a poignant and engaged documentary — a tribute to the strength, dignity, and perseverance of women farmers, guardians of a fragile and changing land.
